Lestis Carpenter Bee Photos

Female green carpenter bees (Xylocopa (Lestis)) have shiny metallic green bodies with little surface fur (see Metallic Carpenter Bee photo gallery). In contrast the males of these species have fur on their thorax, making them look quite different.

Ernst van der Veen contributed the following two beautiful photos of a male carpenter bee in flight, clearly showing their fur and striking colour markings:
