A Rare Native Bee Photo
by Peter O!

Aussie Bee Homepage > New Native Bee Photos > Great Carpenter Bees

This extraordinary photograph by regular Aussie Bee contributor, Peter O., shows a Blue Banded Bee (left) and a Great Carpenter Bee (right) foraging on the same flower!

An 11 mm long Blue Banded Bee is a medium-sized native bee, easily spotted flying around flowers. However, as shown in Peter's remarkable photograph, it is dwarfed by the Great Carpenter Bee. At up to 24 mm long, the Great Carpenter Bee is Australia's largest native bee.

Anyone who has attempted to photograph these fast flying native bees will appreciate Peter's achievement in capturing these two different bees (and both in focus!) in this image.
